Poisoned baits pose a threat to vultures in Nepal

Poisoning is the greatest threat to vultures globally. Asia’s were driven near extinction through poisoning by veterinary non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) diclofenac. Since ban on use of diclofenac in Nepal 2006, there has been a partial recovery vulture populations country. However, other threats are emerging, including vulture-toxic NSAIDs, as well forms unintentional poisoning. The poison baits, whereby animal carcasses laced with target carnivores, often results collateral deaths vultures. Here, we summarize data number such incidents, and killed, between 2011 2023. A total 224 seven species found dead at 22 incidents across Himalayan griffons accounted for over half fatalities (n = 108), along 93 White-rumped small numbers four species. We recommend that conservationists raise awareness this issue local stakeholders, try devise mitigation measures reduce population.
